Compassion without courage …

“Compassion without courage ceases under pressure, and compassion without justice is wasted. Justice without mercy becomes cruelty, and chastity without charity becomes coldness. The ” hard” virtues are like the bones in a body, and the “soft” virtues like tissues. Bones without tissues are a skeleton, and tissues without bones are a jellyfish. In reacting against our ancestors whose morality sometimes resembled a skeleton, we have embraced a morality that sometimes resembles a jellyfish.”
