“Jesus said, “apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). What a crushing blow to our egos. How could the Lord expect us to have any sort of self-respect and self-confidence by making statements like this?
So we continue to do a lot of things without Him. We make plans, build churches, preach sermons, engage in business, buy houses, ad infinitum. We live much of our lives outside of Him.
Yet in God’s sight all of that adds up to “nothing.” When the day of accounting comes, everything done outside of His purpose will be burned up. It will have been wasted – wasted time, wasted energy, wasted life.
The only part of our lives that will endure the fire of God’s final judgment will be that part which became a vessel for His purpose, a vessel given over wholly to the hands of the Potter. It is out of our daily dependence on Him that the Potter will create vessels fit for His use.”
